That bugger on the left had one of its u-joints just about completely seized on one of its axis. So nice to pull that old one off and feel that it is for sure broken. Makes me sleep well at night. As with everything on my car, once something breaks, it's time to upgrade. Went for the STi coupler since it is all metal and no dampening. That with the steering rack bushings should make my car feel all newish!

Good to know my armchair mechanic-ing on this one wasn’t completely full of poo. Granted, I had researched the problem before.

New parts are exciting

Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction. I was going down a rabbit hole of NASIOC pages. Got me to change those steering rack bushings too that I was close to farming out to a shop.

That looks like a much simpler part on the right.

Those are much more interesting than what I’ve found needs to be done...eventually...to the Audi.
Brakes? Required. Inner CV boot? Yeah, whatever. It doesn’t make noise, and the car has 164K ish miles. And it’s not like it’s *hard* to get out.

Sounds similar to me right now. I have new pads ready to install and need to replace the tie rod boot so might just replace the tie rods as well?

I fear this job is in my future on my STi. Not excited about it.

Surprisingly very easy. I was replacing the steering rack bushings so the rack was down a little bit, which helped. The old Coupler, being seized made it a little tricky to get it off, but it’s just two bolts and sliding it on and off.
